Are You Visiting the Dentist Often Enough?

Nov 30 • 1 minute read

Good oral healthcare isn’t just diligent brushing and flossing. While at-home care is vital to a healthy smile, the most important aspect of taking care of your oral health is regular visits to your dentist for cleanings and exams. These routine visits not only allow your dentist to stay informed of your well-being, but also bolster your dental health with cleanings and other preventive treatments.

But how often should you be scheduling these visits, and is it often enough for your unique needs?

The Biannual Standard

If you don’t experience dental discomfort, have healthy gums, and no other acute or chronic concerns, there’s good news for you. Barring any emergencies or sudden developments, you should only have to visit your dentist twice a year for routine cleanings and exams.

At these appointments, your dentist will check the health of your gums and screen for oral cancer, and a hygienist will clean your teeth and gums of plaque for a fresh, healthy smile.
Children

Like adults, children usually only have to see a dentist once every six months. However, some children are more prone to cavities and other complications that may necessitate more attention.

It is important to foster healthy eating and hygiene habits to prevent children from falling victim to advanced tooth decay.

Expectant Mothers

The hormonal and chemical changes that pregnant women experience can have drastic and wildly varying effects on the body, some of which can increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. A squeaky-clean smile is important to the health of you and your child, but dental care and intensive procedures should be postponed until after the first trimester.

If you are planning on starting a family, consider having your dental needs addressed before becoming pregnant, if possible.

Some Standard Deviation May Apply

Some people are genetically predisposed to certain oral health issues, but for the vast majority of us, every six months is the ideal time-frame to schedule your visits. If you experience more frequent discomfort or signs of gingivitis, talk with your dentist to figure out what treatment plan works best for you.
